Edouard MICHELIN (23 juin 1859- 25 aout 1940) et André MICHELIN (16 janvier 1853 – 4 avril 1931)

Michelin est une entreprise française de pneumatiques, fondée à Clermont-Ferrand en 1889 par les frères Michelin. En 1891, suite à une demande de réparation à Clermont-Ferrand d’un cycliste anglais équipé de simples boudins en caoutchouc (inventé par Dunlop), Edouard Michelin perfectionne le pneu pour vélo en inventant le 1er pneumatique démontable.   Avec une chambre à air indépendante du pneumatique, cela peut être réparé en un quart d'heure au lieu de plusieurs heures. Ce système s’adapte à l'automobile en 1894. 

Sa mascotte est un petit bonhomme fait de pneus blancs empilés, du nom de « Bibendum » que Marius Rossilon, dit O'Galop, représentera le mieux en 1898 pour faire de la publicité.

Michelin est aussi un éditeur de guides touristiques et cartes routières à l'usage des automobilistes.

Michelin is a French tyre manufacturing company, founded in Clermont-Ferrand in 1889 by the Michelin brothers. In 1891, following hours of repair after request from an English cyclist whose pneumatic tyre needed fixing, Edouard Michelin perfected this bicycle tyre (simple rubber tubes invented by Dunlop) by inventing the 1st removable pneumatic tyre. With an air chamber independent of the tire, this could be repaired in a quarter of an hour instead of several hours. This system was adapted to the automobile in 1894 and revolutionised the auto industry.

Michelin’s very recognisable mascot is a little man made of stacked white tires, named "Bibendum,” represented by Marius Rossilon (aka O'Galop) in 1898 for advertising purposes. Michelin is also a publisher of tourist guides and road maps for motorists.
