Willy RONIS (1910-2009)

Willy Ronis est un photographe français né en 1910 et mort en 2009. Il est l’une des figures les plus importantes de la photographie humaniste française. Il s’initie à la photographie à l’âge de 15 ans, lorsque son père lui offre un appareil photo. Il parcourt alors les rues de la capitale. Petit à petit, il s’initie aux travaux des grands photographes et finit même par aider son père au studio, lorsque celui-ci tombe gravement malade. En 1946 jusqu'en 1955, il entre à l’agence Rapho et rejoint les grands pontes de la photographie tels que Brassaï, Doisneau ou encore Landeau.  Il photographie plus tard des paysages de l’Allemagne de l’Est, toujours dans une perspective militante, mais aussi les décors parisiens, en particulier dans le 20ème arrondissement, son quartier de cœur. Il a cette particularité de traiter les sujets sensibles avec un œil singulier, tout en apportant une certaine joie de vivre aux plus difficiles des environnements.  Au cours de sa vie, il publiera de nombreux ouvrages et figuera dans de nombreuses expositions. Il cessera définitivement la photographie en 2002, atteint d’arthrite.

Willy Ronis was a French photographer born in 1910.  He is one of the most important figures of French humanist photography. He was introduced to photography at the age of 15, when his father gave him a camera. He then walked the streets of Paris taking pictures and learning the techniques of photography. In 1946 until 1955, he joined the Rapho agency with other big names such as Brassaï, Doisneau and Landeau. Ronis continued to photograph various Parisian settings, in particular the 20th arrondissement which was his favourite district, and also landscapes of East Germany, always from a militant perspective. In his photos, he dealt with sensitive subjects with a singular eye, while bringing a certain joie de vivre to the most difficult of environments. During his life, he published many works and appeared in many exhibitions. He stopped photography for good in 2002, after suffering from arthritis.
